NFC Asset Tracking
Hundreds of gear items. One tap to track them all.
The Challenge
Hundreds of outdoor gear items spread across multiple locations — kayaks, climbing gear, archery equipment, maintenance tools. Everything was "tracked" in spreadsheets that were always out of date. Maintenance got missed, equipment went missing, and nobody had a clear picture of what was where or when it was last serviced.
The Fix
I put an NFC tag on every piece of equipment and built a custom mobile web interface. A technician walks up to any item, taps their phone on the tag, and instantly sees the full history — last maintenance date, repair notes, location, condition rating. They log their work with a few taps and move on. The backend tracks everything: service schedules, overdue items, location history, and generates reports for management. A dedicated NFC reader station handles bulk scanning for inventory checks.
The Result
Equipment downtime dropped significantly. Service schedules actually got followed because the system made it easier to log work than to skip it. Management got real-time visibility into the state of their entire equipment fleet. And the techs — who were the ones I was most worried about adopting it — loved it because it replaced the spreadsheet they hated.
